From the winter semester 2024/25, all students at the University of Koblenz and Koblenz University of Applied Sciences will receive the Deutschland-Semesterticket (D-Semesterticket) as a cell phone ticket. The University of Koblenz, Koblenz University of Applied Sciences and the Studierendenwerk Koblenz have concluded corresponding contracts with the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Mosel (VRM). Prior to this, the student parliaments had discussed the Deutschlandticket as a semester ticket and voted clearly in favor of its introduction - partly on the basis of student surveys conducted in advance.

In this FAQ, we answer the most frequently asked questions about the D-Semesterticket for students.

Can I have the D-Semesterticket as a chip card?

The D-Semesterticket can also be issued as a chip card on request. The chip card costs 10 euros once. For technical reasons, the D-Semesterticket cannot be used via the Student ID card/UniCard like the previous semester ticket. However, it is not possible to use both the cell phone ticket and the chip card at the same time. Your cell phone ticket will be deactivated as soon as your chip card is issued.

If required, you can obtain the application form for the chip card from the Student Secretariat or Student Services. Please submit the legibly completed and signed application to the Student Secretariat as a printout or as a PDF file. You will then receive the chip card at the address you provided in the application.
Please note: It can take up to 10 weeks between submitting the application and receiving the chip card. The digital cell phone ticket can be used temporarily.

I already have the D-Ticket upgrade for students via the VRM D-Ticket app. Do I have to cancel it?

In this case, students no longer have to worry about anything.
First semester students who may be using the regular Deutschlandticket must cancel their D-Ticket in good time in order to avoid a double charge.

How much does the D-Semesterticket cost?

The cost of the D-Semesterticket is included in the semester fee that you pay when you enrol or re-register. For students in Koblenz and Höhr-Grenzhausen, the D-Semesterticket accounts for EUR 176.40 of the semester fee, which corresponds to EUR 29.40 per month. > back to overview

Am I obliged to purchase the D-Semesterticket?

Yes, the costs of the D-Semesterticket are included in the semester fee as a compulsory component. In accordance with the principle of solidarity, all students pay the same contribution - regardless of their intention to use the semester ticket. This is the only way to make the reduced price possible.
Severely disabled students who are already entitled to use public transport free of charge can apply for a refund of the D-Semesterticket - find out more here.

Who does not receive a D-Semesterticket?

The following groups do not pay a contribution to the D-Semesterticket and are therefore excluded from using it:

  • Guest and part-time students
  • Early students
  • Students on distance learning courses (ZFH/ZFUW students)
  • Students on leave and semesters abroad who do not pay the full semester fee
  • Students on part-time degree courses who are predominantly employed

Will the cost of the D-Semesterticket remain stable?

The price of the D-Semesterticket depends on the price of the Deutschlandticket. If the price of the Deutschlandticket increases, the price of the D-Semesterticket will also increase. However, the 40% discount remains in place even if the price is adjusted.
If the price of the D-ticket is adjusted within a current semester, this has no effect on the price of the D semester ticket, as this has already been paid for the duration of an entire semester.

What happens to the Student ID card/UniCard?

From the winter semester 2024/25, the student ID card/UniCard will no longer entitle you to use local public transport. However, the card will continue to serve as an official student ID, as a means of payment in the Studierendenwerk canteens/cafeterias and as a library card. Validation is therefore still necessary every semester.

> back to overview

Do I still have to validate my Student ID/UniCard?

Yes, validation is still necessary, because only then will you have a valid student ID and be able to use it to pay in the Studierendenwerk canteens/cafeterias and as a library card.
If you have already validated your student ID/UniCard before the start of the winter semester 2024/25, you will need to repeat the validation after the start of the winter semester so that the imprint for the travel authorization in the VRM is removed. This will avoid any misunderstandings, as the student ID card will no longer be valid as a ticket from the winter semester onwards.
